Sellers Underground Closes
The 4th Street bar said that COVID-19 capacity restrictions made it impossible to continue.
In a post on Instagram of Saturday, Sellers Underground announced that is was closing permanently, effective immediately, as a result of restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The post on Instagram read:
“A few days short of our 4 year anniversary, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close Sellers Underground effective immediately. COVID-19 capacity restrictions have made it impossible for us to continue. Thank y’all for the support!”
Michael Icenhauer of Icenhauer’s on Rainey Street opened Sellers Underground in mid-December 2016, in the heart of the Warehouse District on 4th Street, sandwiched in between two of Austin’s most popular gay bars — Oilcan Harry’s and Rain on 4th. When it opened, it was defined as an ‘ally’ bar, but it made quick inroads with the LGBTQ+ community, hosting several community events and weekly shows until eventually ‘coming out’ as an LGBTQ+ bar in February 2018.
Prior to Sellers, the space at 213 West 4th Street has been home to several gay bars, including most recently Castro’s Warehouse, Hyde, and Boyz Cellar.
Sellers is the second LGBTQ+ bar in Austin to close as a result of the current public health crisis. BT2 in North Austin closed in May.
